Zychlin Projects and Donations
Thank you to those of you who answered the call to support translation of the Zychlin Yizkor Book and other shtetl projects!
ADJCP is especially appreciative of a substantial donation to the translation project from Lawrence Zlatkin in honor of his late father Ralph Zlatkin, a native Zychliner who survived several years in forced labor camps, including Auschwitz, before emigrating to Canada. Lawrence has also indicated plans to support upcoming Zychlin projects, including clean-up of the town’s Jewish cemetery and the local high school education program.
Zychlin projects include:
· Translation of the Yizkor Book – which is well underway (completion expected by the end of the year). In addition, we plan to translate several memoirs written by Zychliners who survived the Holocaust.
· Cemetery clean-up and restoration project – ADJCP is working with the Matzevah Foundation to clean up the Jewish cemetery this summer or fall, with planned involvement by Zychlin descendants and local youth. We are also scoping a broader cemetery restoration and rededication plan.
· Local education program – We are also collaborating with School for Dialogue on a program in which Zychlin high schoolers will explore the history of Jews in Poland and their social, political and economic contributions. We plan to complement the curriculum with participation by descendants of Zychlin’s Jewish community.
